The Function
The Facts
Approximately 99% of calcium is in the bones and teeth where it plays an important part in the bone structure, bone strength and the building up of bones. Calcium levels in the blood are carefully regulated and the level of absorption is met to the needs of the body , which maintainins a calcium balance. The metabolite of Vitamin D, calcitrol (1,25 dihydroxycholecacliferol) enhances the absorption of calcium.
A lack of calcium could lead to a condition called rickets in children and osteoporosis in adults. This is where the bones are very weak.
