Sodium

The Function

  1. bullet pointRegulates body water content and electrolyte balances
  2. bullet pointMaintains pH balance.
  3. bullet pointAllows some nutrients and water to pass through the gut to move through the body.

The Facts
Sodium together with potassium and chloride are largely responsible for the osmolality of body fluids. An affect on osmolality (i.e. increase in sodium ,chloride or potassium levels) can affect the distribution of body fluids, such as blood.  Maintains blood volume and blood pressure by maintain extracellular fluid (ECF) volume.  Maintains acid-base balance.  Sodium is especially important for nerve impulses, muscle contractions and the absorption of nutrients because it maintains a gradient across cell membranes.

Sodium levels are regulated by a balance between sodium excretion and absorption at the kidneys.

The Foods
A component of Salt (sodium chloride).

Ready meals,  condiments (such as tomato ketchup), and savoury snacks (such as pretzels, maize and rice flour snacks).
Processed meats, (including bacon and sausages), anchovies, and shrimps.

Some breakfast cereals, breads and cheeses.
