The Facts
Iodine forms part of the thyroid hormones, thyroxine and triidothyronine, which are needed to maintain metabolic rate. They are also necessary for cellular metabolism and connective tissue. In terms of mental development, Iodine is necessary for the development of the nervous system during the first trimester of pregnancy. 

 

The Foods
Seaweed and eggs.
Fish (such as haddock and mackerel).

Also found in cereals and grains but the amount depends on the iodine content in the soil.
