Vitamin B3 (Niacin)
The Function
It is the precursor in the reaction of NAD+/NADH and NADP+/NADPH, which are co enzymes in the metabolic pathway. The reaction of these enzymes is crucial for efficient metabolism. A deficiency can lead to Pellagra, which can be described as diarrhoea, dermatitis, dementia and death.
High dietary intakes of Tryptophan results in a greater efficiency conversion to niacin. Requirements are linked to energy expenditure
